When telecommuting, creating a safe workspace is as important as when in the office. Here are some helpful hints to ensure your work area is productive and safe.
Safe Work Area
- Maintain a safe and clear walking path to your workstation
- Secure power cords so they do not get caught on your foot; do not overload electrical outlets
- Never stand on a chair or other unsafe item to reach something at height
- When moving an item, break it down to smaller loads when possible. Position the object as close to your body prior to lifting and avoid twisting or tripping.
- Use handrails on stairs
Workstation Setup
- Strive for neutral body posture when setting up your workspace
- Position your chair so that you can sit back in the seat with your feet flat on the floor or footrest
- Work surface height should allow your elbows to be bent at 90 degrees
- Your monitor should be an arm’s length away with the top of the screen at, or slightly below, eye level
- Keep your forearms parallel to the floor, close to the body with wrists straight and relaxed
Healthy Habits
- Change your posture at frequent intervals to minimize fatigue
- Take regular micro-breaks with gentle stretches and movement
- Daily de-cluttering of the workspace will help maintain a safe space and balance the transition between work and home mode
